Jayme Sandall, a highly respected karateka and coach of former Ultimate Fighting Championship kingpin Vitor Belfort, has shared his insights on some of the most talented names in the UFC. With a career spanning 28 years and an impressive 445 victories in karate matches, Sandall has a wealth of experience and knowledge to draw from. He has worked with Belfort in the past, helping him prepare for five bouts that culminated in Belfort taking on Anderson Silva in 2011. Currently a striking coach, Sandall represented the Brazilian national team for karate for 21 years, led by Yoshizo Machida, father of Lyoto Machida.
Top Strikers in UFC
Before pointing to any one fighter, Sandall noted that the top strikers he sees are not born from karate disciplines. Instead, they are all kickboxers of some variety. He mentioned Israel Adesanya as intelligent, fast, and calm, making him very dangerous. Jiri Prochazka is described as weird in a good way, skillfully dodging, lowering his guard, and throwing jabs that surprise opponents. Sandall also praised Alex Pereira, calling him incredible with heavy hands and a solid chin.
Speculations on Potential Matchups
There is speculation about “Poatan” Pereira facing Prochazka in a light heavyweight championship bout, but the UFC has not confirmed it yet. Sandall analyzed the potential pairing between two of his three favorites and offered advice to the Brazilian. He believes that Pereira needs to move back more and take fewer hits, as he comes from kickboxing, where the glove is bigger and fighters allow themselves to take hits to close the distance. In MMA, the gloves are much smaller and harder, making this strategy less viable.
Sandall also suggested that Pereira work on his dodging and footwork when moving backward, as Jiri moves back very well and can set a trap for Pereira to approach and counter. By focusing on these aspects of his game, Pereira may be able to excel in potential matchups down the line against opponents like Prochazka.
