Former UFC Challenger Jorge Masvidal Announces Comeback from Retirement

Well, well, well. Jorge Masvidal’s retirement from the world of combat sports was shorter than a blink.

He’s back, folks.

The ex-UFC welterweight contender dropped the bombshell on social media Monday night. His announcement? He’s “unretired”. No more info, no less. Just that.

“Unretired.” That’s what he tweeted.

As for where “Gambred” might throw down, it’s anyone’s guess. Last year, the Miami-born fighter hinted he might be interested in boxing. Fun fact: Masvidal made his professional boxing debut way back in 2005.

He didn’t drop any names when he spoke to ESPN last October. But he did say, “It’s early next year, and I can tell you somebody is going to get killed.”

His last MMA match was at UFC 287. He lost to Gilbert Burns in April 2023. It was his fourth loss in a row. Despite this, he’s a standout at American Top Team and shot to fame in 2019 after beating Darren Till, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz.

After his loss to Burns, he announced his retirement. “I love everybody here,” he told the crowd in Miami. “This is where I started my career. It’s been a long 20 years, 50-some fights. Sometimes your favorite basketball player don’t have that 3-pointer no more. Your favorite quarterback loses that rifle. I don’t feel the same when I get in here no more. It’s been 20 long years.”

Since then, Masvidal’s kept busy as a promoter with his Gamebred FC organization. He’s 39 now and recently reached a plea deal to have felony charges dropped. This was in relation to his attack on rival Colby Covington outside a Miami Steakhouse in 2022 after their bout at UFC 272.
