Islam Makhachev is gearing up for what he believes will be a walk in the park during his next title defense. This time, he’s up against Dustin Poirier.
The fight is set for UFC 302. It’ll take place on June 1 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Makhachev respects Poirier’s striking skills but is confident in his ground game. He recalls how Khabib Nurmagomedov, his mentor, previously dominated Poirier. Makhachev expects to replicate that success.
“Dustin’s a warrior, a legend,” Makhachev commented. He pointed out Poirier’s vulnerability in wrestling and grappling. “I’ve got the key for an easy fight,” he added, confident in his strategy.
Originally, Makhachev had his sights set on Justin Gaethje. However, plans changed after Gaethje lost his title to Max Holloway. With Arman Tsarukyan turning down the fight due to timing, Poirier emerged as the top choice for Makhachev’s defense.
Makhachev sees Poirier as the most suitable opponent now. “It’s just Dustin now,” he stated, given the current landscape of their division.
Poirier’s tendency to go for guillotines, despite never winning with one, is noted by Makhachev. He’s preparing for that, among other things. “I’m ready for your guillotine,” Makhachev warned.
Looking ahead, Makhachev dreams of conquering the welterweight division too. He’s not interested in the BMF title, though. His focus is on securing a second belt at 170.
“My dream fight is for the second belt [at] 170,” Makhachev shared. He’s eyeing a significant challenge beyond just defending his current title.
