Paulo Costa, a professional fighter, became embroiled in an incident with a fan during a recent event at UFC 294. Despite not participating in his scheduled fight, Costa was present at cageside. The incident occurred when an overzealous fan attempted to confront him. The fan is seen leaping from the stands at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, prompting security to intervene. Notwithstanding the interference by security, the fighter managed to land a right hand punch at the approaching spectator before being held back. The cause of the conflict remains obscure.
In addition to the altercation, Costa broadcasted a video of the skirmish on social media. He used this platform to direct a vitriolic message at fellow fighter Khamzat Chimaev, which was attached in the caption of the video. The crudely humorous and defiant message read, “Don’t mess with me lil chenchen I send you back home with smack straight in ur big forehead my right arm is working already.”
Costa was initially slated to fight Chimaev in the co-main event of UFC 294 but had to withdraw due to a staph infection on his elbow that required multiple surgeries. Despite his non-participation, Costa was present at the event and was met with a chorus of boos when he was showcased on camera. Chimaev, on the other hand, won a majority decision against Kamaru Usman in the event’s new co-main match. His victory will likely pave the way for a shot at the middleweight title against current champion Sean Strickland.
